Thompson Pump and Manufacturing Company was named a 2020 Cigna Well-Being Award recipient for its efforts in creating a healthy place to work and do business. There are 106 employees at Thompson Pump, manufacturer of heavy-duty portable bypass and dewatering pumps.

Cigna Well-Being Award applicants are evaluated based on the core components of their wellness program, including leadership engagement, company culture, strategy and goals, implementation, and employee engagement. All applications are scored and reviewed by a panel of Cigna Health promotion experts and Thompson Pump was honoured with the top tier award level “Outstanding Culture of Well-Being” in North Florida.

Thompson Pump has been finding ways to focus on the health and wellbeing of its employees over the last seven years, and it improves and adds activities each year. Human Resource Director at Thompson Pump and Manufacturing Company Victor Nadeau said when it comes to keeping their workers safe through the pandemic, the company follows CDC guidelines.

“It started as an event to pull in wellness vendors. Now we have three challenges a year; a wellness day, recipe challenges; biometrics and flu shots,” he said.

Thompson Pump’s wellness committee looked for ways to engage employees during the pandemic in 2020. This included hosting activities and challenges that could be done from home, such as a having everyone watch a video series with topics about physical and mental health, and healthy cooking; having people participate in walking challenges; holding virtual activities such as yoga, stretching and mindfulness classes; and sharing monthly newsletters from Cigna to help inform employees of ways to practice self-care.

“The health and wellbeing of everyone who works here is of the utmost importance,” said President of Thompson Pump Chris Thompson. “We couldn’t do what we do without our team and we want each and every person to be and feel the best they can.”

The team also had all employees submit their favourite healthy recipes. Those recipes were compiled into a cookbook, which was given to everyone as part of the company’s 50th-anniversary celebration.

“We have 50 per cent engagement,” said Nadeau. “Everyone was excited to have something to do while most of our lives were on lockdown.

“This wellness program is extremely important to me and I’m so proud of the work our team has done to champion it,” said Thompson Pump Human Resource Director Victor Nadeau. “We will continue to innovate and provide ways to keep a healthy working environment for everyone at Thompson Pump.”
